Just in case you’ve missed it, here’s the background to this fabulous bit of Icelandic folklore! Countdown to publication: Rupture DAY ONE.
The next Santa is Window Peeper (Gluggagægir in Icelandic)! He arrives on 21st December and leaves on 3rd January, and his MO is to peer through the windows of Icelandic homes in search of something to swipe! Like most of the Santas, he has a perpetually empty belly, and it’s food he’s seeking. I’m starting to think that Icelanders must lock up all their food over the Christmas period … and it’s becoming increasingly clear that GRÝLA has not taught her sons any manners. Sadly for Window Peeper, he’s not very attractive, and the sight of him causes children to flee from the windows in floods of tears. Unlike most of the Santas, he doesn’t mind being seen, and he taunts those who spy him!
Window Peeper was a very curious fellow
he visited most farms and took a look inside.
Lying at the windows he made faces a people,
and if somebody saw him he just gave a laugh.
The children fled in haste to escape the sight,
for he really had an ugly face.
AND to celebrate the tenth day of the RUPTURE countdown, we’ll be giving away TWO fabulous books! Signed copies of Louise Beech‘s beautiful debut How To Be Brave, which was a Guardian Readers’ Pick last Christmas, and her moving, dark, haunting The Mountain in My Shoe, which has been on COUNTLESS best books of the year lists already!
Either share on Facebook or retweet on Twitter to be in with a chance of winning! We’ll announce the winner of the previous day’s draw when we post details of the next Santa!
