Description

Lori Anderson is as tough as they come, managing to keep her career as a fearless Florida bounty hunter separate from her role as single mother to nine-year-old Dakota, who suffers from leukaemia. But when the hospital bills start to rack up, she has no choice but to take her daughter along on a job that will make her a fast buck. And that’s when things start to go wrong.

The fugitive she’s assigned to haul back to court is none other than JT, Lori’s former mentor – the man who taught her everything she knows … the man who also knows the secrets of her murky past. Not only is JT fighting a child exploitation racket operating out of one of Florida’s biggest theme parks, Winter Wonderland, a place where ‘bad things never happen’, but he’s also mixed up with the powerful Miami Mob. With two fearsome foes on their tails, just three days to get JT back to Florida, and her daughter to protect, Lori has her work cut out for her. When they’re ambushed at a gas station, the stakes go from high to stratospheric, and things become personal.

Breathtakingly fast-paced, both hard-boiled and heart-breaking, Deep Down Dead is a simply stunning debut from one of the most exciting new voices in crime fiction.

‘The ride Deep Down Dead delivers is fast-paced, zipping around the South Eastern US with chases, fights, ambushes and desperate escapes … All the action is well described, with the right amount of bone crunching, gunfire and gore. ‘I read most of Deep Down Dead in one day, in one sitting, in just a few hours, and can honestly say that it’s a BRILLIANT action thriller! Sexy, gripping, fast-paced, fresh… and definitely a page turner that will keep you reading late into the night or all day long (trust me – I know from experience!). Steph Broadribb has created a fantastic rollercoaster read.’ Off The Shelf Books

.

‘Once I began reading Deep Down Dead I knew I was reading something special, a debut that, if there’s any justice in the book world, will be huge and be the start of a long and book-filled career for Steph. Deep Down Dead might just be my favourite debut novel ever. When they start off this good, you know nothing but greatness is destined to follow. When I finished reading Deep Down Dead there was simply no question of me not reviewing it as loudly as possible. It has been a number of months since a book made my Hall of Fame and so hopefully that gives some indication of what a special book this is.’ Book Addict Shaun

......

‘Broadribb has combined it with compelling characters, a fast moving plot and an authentic American voice. Without trying to give a spoiler, there’s something in the book that’s glaringly obvious to the reader. When Broadribb confirms it later, it’s done naturally and with subtly. So, add fantastic writing and you have one amazing debut. Best of all, we’re left with a bit of a cliffhanger. Book 2 is on its way!’ Joy Kluver

 .

‘I don’t want to say anything more about what happens as I don’t want to spoil the story for you, in case you haven’t read it. But I just have to say, my God, the tension in the final pages had me gripping the end of my seat until the novel came to a very neat and satisfying conclusion. Steph has created a great cast of characters and I can’t wait to see more of Lori and JT in her next book!’ Jacob Reviews Books

‘I won’t say much more as I think the novel does that for itself. What I will say is this: It is a fast-paced, nail-biting, hard hitting novel which not only takes you on an all guns blazing action adventure but will also take you through the emotional ringer. Yet another stand out novel published by Orenda Books which every crime fan must read. I just can’t wait to get my mitts on the next instalment in the series!’ Chillers, Killers and Thrillers

..

‘Okay. So yes. Wow. What a book. I will be posting a full review in the coming weeks but this is abso-fluffing-lutely blinkin’ brilliant. Fast paced, high octane action and with great characters, Lori and JT, that you can’t help but root for. The plot is fab and the observational aspect (the language, the attitude, the actions) of the characters, particularly Lori, superb. You really got a feel for her, her strength, her stubbornness and her resilience.’

Jen Medlicott

.

‘It’s a cat and mouse game all the way, when what appears to be a simple job goes south in a spectacular fashion. I love nothing more than a good thriller, and Steph has delivered a *great* thriller, steeped in Americana with settings and characters which feel completely authentic and with a plot which insists that you don’t put it down. I read this on holiday recently and found myself staying up entirely too late to read just one more chapter. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.’ Espresso Coco

.

‘Deep Down Dead moves at a frenetic pace, the characters are well drawn, especially Lori, the heroine, who is tough as nails without being unrealistically so. She’s not Wonder Woman, but she takes no prisoners and certainly won’t be intimidated by the various men that inhabit the masculine world she makes a living in. The author has set Deep Down Dead up nicely for a sequel, which I for one will be sure to read, and I can’t recommend this novel enough.’

Deep Down Dead is fast paced, intelligent, intense and character driven whilst being full of thrills and spills, edge of seat moments and the odd time where you pull all your hair out and read it with half a hand clapped over your eyes. If ever a book should be a movie Deep Down Dead is it, with its beautifully authentic locations, insanely well layered characters and a plot to die for. Just you know, remember to breathe. The writing is superb, the language crackles the character voices being spot on perfect  – descriptively this is an utter joy, a truly immersive experience where the world around you fades and you are thrown into Lori’s world.’ Liz Loves Books

.

‘I’m almost completely lost for words! What a book! There’s an endorsement on the front cover of this book from none other than Ian Rankin who says ‘Like Midnight Run, but much darker…really, really good’. Yes it is. One of the best thrillers I’ve read all year. I’m not going to rattle on too much with plot details or story outlines. Once you start reading this book, you won’t be able to stop – that is all.’

.

‘This book reads like an action packed Hollywood movie and it would never surprise me if it ends up on the big screen, it certainly reads like an action blockbuster. In my humble opinion Deep Down Dead is a rare and exceptional well written debut, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an action packed read, with fantastic characters and settings.’ The Book Review Café

..

‘Steph Broadribb has written a compelling book that is a full-on page turner and unlike some action thrillers, it is not at the expense of character development. You need to make sure that you have plenty of time when you start reading this book because you really won’t want to put it down.’ Reading Writes

‘Lori tells her own story in short, sharp sentences, her voice is so clear, yet there are hidden depths, information waiting to be revealed. I gobbled this book up in one sitting, if you want an adrenaline rush of escapism, look no further. ‘Deep Down Dead’ is an explosive, gun-slinging, fast paced read that left me wanting more, there’s surely unfinished business waiting for Lori Anderson!’ Deep Down Dead is Love Reading’s January 2017 Debut of the Month. Love Reading

..

‘Deep Down Dead is a wonderfully exciting novel that had me tearing through the pages at speed.  On the one hand I wanted to read it as quickly as possible but on the other hand I really did not want it to end. It is not often that this happens.  Steph Broadribb deals with the topical issues of child exploitation and sexual abuse with an intensity and maturity that leaves you gasping and with your heart in your mouth. Alongside the excellent characterisation and a sense of place you have in Deep Down Dead a series that is bound to get better and better.’ Shots Mag

.

‘Although we do have lots of page-turning action and fights and dangerous moments, there are also moments of tenderness, doubts, genuine warmth. This is an action thriller with heart and compassion, combining the darkness of film noir with a family story and the ruggedness of a Western. What I really admire is her ability to absorb and render the American idioms, twang and way of life so believably.’

Finding Time to Write

..

‘A glance at the back cover of the book lets us see over 2 dozen authors singing the praises of Steph Broadribb and her debut thriller. I now know why – it is an absolute corker of a read. Perfectly paced. Edgy. Tense and with a lead character you will want to root for. Deep Down Dead delivers the thrills and keeps you reading, it will grip you as it has that elusive “one more chapter”’ magic. Grab This Book

‘This is a fast moving, adrenaline rush of a story with a relatable protagonist who it is hard not to cheer along. Lori is as feisty and independent as they come, refusing to rely on men who all her life have given her nothing but grief. Her past may be catching up with her but she is determined to do whatever it takes to provide for Dakota. A hugely enjoyable, edge of your seat read. As you turn those pages, remember to breath.’ Never Imitate

.

‘The locations in the novel are some of the most vivid and raw I’ve read in a while and the storyline just takes you on one heck of a journey. I was breathless in more than one situation. Talk about being swept along by the action, I don’t think I was able to physically put the book down I was that hooked. Such a unique premise and a unique way of taking you on a very fast paced and tightly plotted journey. I take my (Stetson) hat off to CTG!  This is one heck of a read and I am so in awe of her history as a Bounty Hunter herself. An amazing backstory to an even more amazing thrilling novel. Unique and very very entertaining. More please!!’ The Book Trail

.

‘With characters who jump from the page, and a setting that is recognisable from hundreds of movie scenes, Deep Down Dead really is one hell of a read. This really is very difficult to put down, with constant twists and turns throughout the plot and a wealth of characters; from the great and the good, to the downright bad and dirty. Explosive action and a heroine who is absolutely perfect. Deep Down Dead is a cracker. I loved it.’ Random Things Through My Letter Box

...

‘The story is full of twist and turns, just when you think it might be ok or you can relax just a little something else happens that has you wondering ‘how they are going to get out of that?’  The story is fast-paced enough to keep you guessing but not so much that you lose track of what is going on, a vital point because there is a lot going on in this book.’ Book Lover Worm Blog

.

‘Since the plot is so fast paced and exciting, I won’t even really get into it, but I will say that it had incessant action which made for a very engaging and exhilarating read. The setting travelled all around the Southern part of the US and was as true to life as the character of Lori. Broadribb completely nailed her mannerisms and dialogue and created a character full of depth and intrigue. If you’re a fan of high octane thrillers you won’t want to miss this electrifying debut.’ Novel Gossip

.

‘I really wouldn’t be surprised if this book ended up being turned into a film, it reads as a sensational Hollywood blockbuster.  It has action from the opening pages, reads at a whirlwind pace and never lets up, just enough violence to keep it real without becoming gratuitous and without a doubt one of the best books to be published in 2017.’ The Quiet Knitter

‘What follows is a nail-biting game of cat and mouse between Lori and the man who taught her all she knew. JT, her former mentor, is her charge. However, in getting to JT, Lori winds up dredging up the past, and creating serious trouble for all involved. I’m not going to say any more about it. Deep Down Dead is an ass-kicking thriller of the highest order. I can’t recommend it highly enough!’

Bibliophile Book Club

.

Deep Down Dead is an absolutely great read. It is remarkably and sensitively written. Apart from the build-up of tension (and the blood and guts that come with it), the book also covers the relationship that grows between the three of them and the very natural fears of Lori as she places her daughter in danger.’

Trip Fiction

.

‘‘Deep Down Dead’ is a truly amazing book. It’s an exciting and gripping read with non-stop action. So much is packed into three days. It’s like being on an eternal rollercoaster ride. If you’re a fan of crime then you have to read this book. But please don’t just take my word for it. Get yourself a copy and lose yourself in it. I really can’t wait for the second book in the series. This is definitely going to be one of my top books of 2017.’ A Lover of Books

..

‘This is the first Steph Broadribb book, a non stop action book with some twists and kick-ass characters that can cope with the worst type of humans. Steph has created a bold woman that loves her daughter and is ready to do anything to protect her, even if the enemy is the scaring cancer, I have to say that she makes women proud after reading this book, we can be mothers and fighters at the same time.’

Varietats2010

...

‘The storyline could have been quite harrowing, but one of the reasons I like this novel so much is that it isn’t gratuitous. You are aware what has been happening at the theme parks and there are some violent scenes but nothing that I felt uncomfortable reading. I was smiling to myself reading the description of the theme park. It is something I have never been to and if they are anything like portrayed I won’t be visiting anytime soon.’ Steph’s Book Blog

.

‘Broadribb’s writing is superb, right from the start I got the feeling of it’s location and the high stakes attached to bounty hunting through the plot and the narrative. Now there are some graphic scenes, but that is to be expected given the subject and are well handled and not at all gratuitous – they are needed to give this book credibility.’ Have Books Will Read

.

Deep Down Dead is an enthralling and entertaining read. The action literally had my heart pounding and this is one of those stories that would be great as a block buster of a film. The author has you really caring about the main characters so much so that I’m really hoping this is just one of many books in a series. Simply stunning for a debut!’ By The Letter Books

.

‘The non-stop twists and turns – plus Lori’s constant dilemma as she is torn between the instincts of motherhood and the need to stay focused on her perilous mission – draw in readers like a magnet and keep them hooked to the action right up to the emotional conclusion. Gripping, entertaining and utterly addictive, this is a cracking start to an enthralling new crime series.’ Blackpool Gazette

.

‘This is a beautifully structured novel which is fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable to read. It’s a completely different type of novel to the Stephanie Plum novels despite both having a feisty main protagonist. Deep Down Dead is a dark thriller which is action-packed from cover to cover and a real page-turner. Lori is a really likeable character who the reader cannot help but champion, even when she misjudges a situation. Steph Broadribb has written an absolute gem of a debut novel with lots of promise for future novels in the series.’ Segnalibro

.

‘The is a fast, frenetic pace to this story, the action never seems to let up, and neither does the tension. It drags you along, making the reader speed through the chapters to keep up with Lori and JT and their hunt. Deep Down Dead takes the reader on a tumultuous, frenetic ride one where the pace never lets up and the reader is soon caught up in Lori’s race to save the people she loves.’ From First Page To Last

.

Deep Down Dead is brilliantly observed from start to finish: the plot, its pace, the action, the villainous motives, that riveting Lori/JT backstory – everything. With so much punch and palm-sweating suspense it’s a breakneck, adrenaline-charged stunner of a read that grabs you by both arms and refuses to let go. What. A. Ride.’ Little Bookness Lane

.

‘The book is a true page-turner. Its full of excitement, tension, energy, romance, and to be honest, the book is loaded with all types of emotions. For me, I found this book fun to read. It’s packed full of action and gets the adrenaline pumping. The plot is tremendous! It’s delivered with confidence, pace and assurance. If you like Lee Child and Jack Reacher, you’ll love this book, very much in his style. Deep Down Dead is a fantastic read, and Lori Anderson is a great new character. I can see this making a great film.’ Emma The Little Book Worm

.

‘It’s hard to believe that Deep Down Dead is Steph Broadribb’s debut novel; it’s a slick, fast-moving race against time with a whip-smart sassy female bounty hunter at its heart. Lori Anderson’s a very immediate character which is good because she won’t hang around long enough for you to warm to her, and she probably doesn’t care that much whether you do or not.’ Nut Press

.

‘Guns, handcuffs, gators, a taser-toting bad-ass protagonist, the lovely, handsome JT and young Dakota, who is just the sweetest little girl, Deep Down Dead has it all. At times, it has us gasping, others excitedly punching the air. This book is riveting. It’s deep. It’s dark. it’s deadly. It’s dazzling.’ Ronnie Turner

.

Deep Down Dead is one of the most fast paced books that I have read. At first, the action sets off steadily but then quickly gains momentum and leaves you slightly breathless as it relentlessly builds up. It is not my usual style of book, but in the end, I found it quite difficult to put down. It is written with such confidence and it beautifully sets up a sequel.’ Books Life and Everything

It has action, suspense, a touch of romance, seemingly impossible odds for our protagonists to overcome, and a cliffhanger ending that left me desperate for more. What’s more, it has a strong human angle—you’ll find yourself fully invested in this book’s characters. If you’re looking for a book that’s completely immersive and addictive, DEEP DOWN DEAD is the perfect choice!’ Crime By The Book

‘A thoroughly enjoyable read with enough grip and twists to keep the reader hooked through to the end. A strong debut and I’m looking forward to the next chapter.’ Mumbling About

.

‘Steph Broadribb has brought a really fresh voice to this novel and the crime fiction genre in general. From page one she delivers confident writing with fast, pulsating action and a great set of characters who light up the pages. It’s an edgy and breathless story with explosive twists and turns throughout. The action never stops, the pace never slows down, and Deep Down Dead simply got better with every page.’ Book Drunk

.

‘Overall, an adrenaline-charged, action-packed and hugely entertaining book that I would thoroughly recommend. Full to the brim with violence, kidnapping, chases, bad guys etc… I found Deep Down Dead to be a real page-turner and, in my humble opinion, a truly great debut. I can’t wait to read the next installment in the series.’ The Curious Ginger Cat

.

‘A great introduction to a wonderful new series character, Deep Down Dead is a suspense-filled, action-packed thriller that leaves the reader wanting more, and proves that this debut author has the chops to stand alongside the giants of the crime thriller genre. Expect Steph Broadribb and Lori Anderson to be household names in the near future; in the meantime, get on at the ground floor. I can guarantee you won’t come away disappointed.’ Reader Dad

.

‘Honestly, the back page is covered with absolutely spot-on quotes for how good this book was. The characters really grabbed you, the plot was so intense and I just felt like the whole book left me reeling, in the best way possible. I’m stoked that this is just the first in a series, and I’m incredibly interested to see where the book goes after everything that happened. If you don’t believe me, go pick up this incredible book and see for yourself!’ Girls V Books

.

‘This is a superb start to this, what I hope to be a brilliant series. Burned and Broken is fabulously written.  It’s smooth clever plot reels the reader in and is totally absorbing in its tale. There is a lot of specific elements and Hardie’s writing technique makes this tale worthy of the big screen. I would love to see this in film form … I rather quite liked it.’ Postcard Reviews

.

‘Would I recommend this book?  Well, yes, of course I would.  For me, this is the book that every other book has to beat this year to become my favourite read of 2017.  It’s early days but Deep Down Dead is a long way in the lead at the moment (and we’re not even done with January yet!).  Absolutely everything I want in my novels, and maybe even a little bit more. Astounded that this is a debut and looking eagerly forward to reading the second book in the series. Superb.’

Damp Pebbles

.

Deep Down Dead is an enjoyable, fast paced debut that will appeal to fans of action packed thrillers. It is an exciting debut that feels very different to thrillers that I have read previously. I will be interested to see what is in store for Lori in the forthcoming books in the series.’ The Owl on the Bookshelf

.

‘I just loved it. Broadribb excels at creating atmosphere. She gives Lori a distinctive voice and makes you want to listen to her – whether she’s musing on her past and how she became what she is, coldly assessing her chances in an unequal fight, or engaging in lightning repartee with JT. And, wow, those two… there’s more than a spark there. Again Broadribb makes their relationship convincing, makes you want to know more.’ Blue Book Balloon

.

‘I haven’t read a debut as fresh and exciting as this for a long time. And now I have, I WANT MORE! I also feel it would make a great Hollywood action movie-we need more strong women characters leading the way on the big screen (I had Jennifer Lawrence in my head while reading. Anyone else?) Loved, loved, LOVED IT from start to finish and therefore very highly recommended by me.’ My Chestnut Reading Tree

.

‘This book truly becomes more than just an action thriller; sure, there are plenty of “on the edge of your seat” moments. But the core themes of the novel are so much deeper. Exploring redemption, revenge, the ferocity of a mother’s love and sins of the past, this novel engages its reader emotionally AND brings them on a wild ride. This one gets roaring 5/5 stars from me; if you like an action thriller with an impenetrable plot then I’d recommend this novel.  And clear your schedule, you are not going to want to put this one down.’ Clues and Reviews

.

‘This was hands down for me a FIVE STAR read! I don’t give out my five stars easily, but I truly feel that DEEP DOWN DEAD deserves it. From the character development, to the pace at which the story flows – everything reads and feels right. What is hard to believe is that this is a debut novel! Broadribb writes like she has been doing this for years. She has that special *something* that some authors may spend a lifetime trying to find. Broadribb just has it!’

‘It would be really very easy to unveil one too many details of Deep Down Dead but I’m not going to. Suffice it is to say, it’s a bloody great read!! Steph Broadribb has really blown my mind in a number of manners … Seriously, she has nailed the American dialect in every word spoken and every mannerism portrayed. When reading Deep Down Dead, the reader’s imagination is instantly grabbed hold of and dragged, very willingly I might add, onto a Hollywood set.’

Swirl and Thread

.

‘It is a fast-paced story with strong characters that will pull readers in and leave them wanting more. I certainly hope and believe this is the beginning of a really good series. Broadribb is great storyteller with an eye for detail and penchant for crime.’ Cheryl M-M’s Book Blog

.

‘Broadribb has created some amazing characters, even nine-year-old Dakota is a well-developed character who knows her own mind (as much as any nine-year old can). A female bounty hunter takes her daughter along on a job, and the fugitive happens to be none other than her old mentor, it sounds a bit far-fetched but all the actions fit the characters perfectly, making this a believable story. As with most action-thrillers, you’re going to get some dramatic scenes, and in my opinion, they just add an extra level of entertainment to the storyline.’ Keeper of Pages

.

‘Lori and JT must make some impossible decisions amid an array of risks in this exhausting ride that’ll rob readers of their fingernails. The writing has the hardboiled style of American Noir with several cinematic set-pieces linked with speed that’s break-neck. Violent and action-fuelled Deep Down Dead is a debut with enough authenticity and heart to make a strong impression.’ Deep Down Dead was selected as Crime Thriller Hound’s book of the week.

.

‘The first thing that strikes me about this book is that it’s full of the usual bog standard storyline building blocks of your average half decent American tv drama. A kid, a bounty hunter playing fast and loose with the law, the mob and the two main characters bumping off each other or having done so in the past with the usual results…. But add to that Broadribb’s tense and moving writing style we are presented with a steadfast page turner of a first novel and if she can keep this up for the next couple of books she’ll set herself up as a force to be reckoned with in this genre.’ The Library Door

.

‘Broadribb’s writing is fresh and vivid, crackling with life. There’s a really strong narrative voice, and the first-time author adroitly draws us into Lori’s world as she takes readers on an action-packed road trip through the gritty and grimy parts of the Deep South. Across the board, DEEP DOWN DEAD is an impressive thriller, the kind of book that comfortably sits alongside seasoned pros at the top of their game. Sultry and suspenseful, it marks a welcome first bow for an exceptional new voice.’

Craig Sisterson

.

‘I’m not going to give any of the plot away but I will say that it is full of action, tension and engaging characters. Action that carried through right from the beginning to the very end my attention was well and truly captured. I can’t praise this book enough and my big question is when can I read the next book in this series? If you are looking for a fast paced and thrilling story then you will have picked up the right book with Deep Down Dead!’ Rae Reads

‘This novel is a good 330 pages long and although the story hurtles along at a rapid pace, it is full of detail and full of character development. It’s a story you can invest in and reap the benefits from. It’s a story that can completely take you away from the real world for a while and it was like watching an exceptionally good film or binging on a box set for the evening … I would just like to finish by borrowing the adjectives “hard boiled and heart breaking” though as I think this really captures the success and appeal of the book.’ Bibliomaniac

‘This action-packed debut moves at break-neck speed that turns you upside down and jolts you back and forth. Thank you, author Steph Broadbribb for giving me a whiplash.’ Kindle Ninja Reviews

‘It’s not just in her characterization, but it’s in her plotting, pacing and interweaving the stories of present and past that Broadribb displays more skill than your typical debut novelist. This lived up to every expectation I had from the interviews, reviews, etc. that I’ve heard and read, which was a relief. I sorta feel like I’ve been giving too many 4 Stars lately, like I’ve been overly generous, so I tried to rate this lower. But I just can’t — this is a 4 Star book, easy — and with a little more experience under her belt, Broadribb (and Anderson) will be knocking out 5 Star reads regularly. I can’t wait to see what’s next.’ Irresponsible Reader

‘Lori Anderson, Why Lori?  Aside from the fact she is a kick-ass, feisty heroine who is utterly devoted to her daughter, she is intelligent, sharp, intuitive and whip-smart.  She can kick butt, fire a gun, use a taser and take down the bad guys all by herself.  Y’all need to download this book now and see why Lori is in my Top Ten.’ Compulsive readers Top Ten crime busters
