The deadliest lie might be the one you tell yourself…

A teenage girl makes a desperate call to her parents, telling them that she is about to take her own life. They speed through the night to reach her, but die instantly when their car veers off the road and into a tree.

Henrik Schultz, one of Norway’s most celebrated architects, begins receiving anonymous threats warning him that he is not safe anywhere. During an interview with psychologist and memory expert Kari Voss, another message arrives. He must STOP.

Later that day, a young woman who worked closely with Schultz is found dead at his summer house. Four months pregnant, she made one final call to her boyfriend, telling him she was about to take her own life. But all evidence shows that she was murdered.

As Kari investigates, another woman dies in the same way. An apparent suicide. A final phone call. Someone arriving too late.

The case forces Kari to confront Schultz’s past. As a teenager, he was the sole survivor of a massacre that killed his entire family, but he claims to remember nothing.

At the same time, Kari’s father, Oslo’s former chief of police, follows a new lead into the disappearance of Kari’s son, who has been missing since his seventh birthday, nine years earlier. A sighting in Denmark suggests the boy may still be alive.

Working closely with Chief Inspector Ramona Norum, Kari realises the murders are rooted in memory itself – in what is remembered, forgotten, or believed to be true – with multiple suspects all convinced of their own version of events.

And in this case, remembering may be enough to kill.
